David Philipps, an award-winning journalist and author of “Lethal Warriors: When the New Band of Brothers Came Home,” will be the guest author at the book talk hosted by Colorado College Journalism program and the Political Science Department on Tuesday, March 1, 2011.
“Lethal Warriors” came from Philipps’ special report, “Casualties of War,” a two-part series for the Colorado Springs Gazette that chronicled the Army unit from Fort Carson that was plagued by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Misdiagnosed or untreated since returning from war, PTSD has been a growing problem that continues to plague soldiers and their families. At Fort Carson, some soldiers from that unit have embarked on drug-fueled crime sprees, some of which resulted in murder.
Philipps writes in the Gazette special report, “[The] 3,500-soldier unit — now called the 4th Infantry Division’s 4th Brigade Combat Team — fought in some of the bloodiest places in Iraq, taking the most casualties of any Fort Carson unit by far.
Back home, 10 of its infantrymen have been arrested and accused of murder, attempted murder or manslaughter since 2006. Others have committed suicide, or tried to.”
In “Lethal Warriors,” Philipps highlights the inspiring story of Major General Mark Graham, a former commander at Fort Carson who had the vision and guts to see a growing problem with soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, and to do something about it.
Graham opened his doors to the community for help, speaking candidly about the issue and offering a potential lifeline to the soldiers and a solution to this deadly problem.
In addition to the book’s release, it was Philipps’ journalism that also won him the Livingston Award for national reporting and placed him as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
